Electrical diagnostic costs: compare what the visit buys

A useful comparison begins with investigation time, authorization and deliverables, not an invented average repair price.

The short answer

Ask each provider what its diagnostic charge includes, how extra work is approved and what record you receive. The cost depends on the complaint, access and findings. A clear initial authorization is more useful than a price that assumes the cause before anyone attends.

01 / In practice

Write the same question for every provider

Describe the symptom and the decision you need to make. “Several kitchen receptacles stopped working; please establish the cause and quote the required repair” defines a different task from “replace this visibly damaged device after an earlier assessment.” Send the same brief, property type and access information when comparing providers. Explain whether the issue is intermittent and whether a previous report exists. Quotes based on different assumptions can look competitive while buying different services. Request an assessment suitable for the question, with the attending electrician’s qualifications and any supervision arrangements confirmed.

02 / In practice

Separate attendance, investigation and completed repair

Ask whether a call-out covers travel only, a defined period on site or both. Establish whether diagnostic work, a written explanation and small materials are included. Clarify minimum charges, additional time increments, taxes and any agreed return attendance directly with the provider. These are questions for a quotation, not figures the website can supply reliably. An appointment that identifies a problem may still need parts, another trade or an authority inspection. Make sure the provider explains when the initial authorization ends and a new decision is required from you.

03 / In practice

Make access assumptions visible

Finished walls, locked rooms, occupied suites and shared electrical equipment affect what can be established during one attendance. Tell the provider which areas are available and who can arrange additional access. Ask whether opening and restoring finishes would be a separate approved item, and who performs that work. In a business, a shutdown may need a planned window rather than a spontaneous interruption. A quote that excludes access work is not necessarily incomplete, but that exclusion needs to be visible before you compare it with a wider investigation allowance.

04 / In practice

Use a staged approval when findings are uncertain

Agree who can approve additional time or a proposed repair, and how the provider will reach that person. If the property manager is coordinating but the owner pays, clarify their respective authorization limits. Ask for the finding, proposed action and changed scope before optional work proceeds. A contractor may also need to explain immediate restrictions or protective action; preserve those instructions separately from an elective upgrade proposal. For required permits and inspections, identify the actual authority and responsible applicant. Calgary’s process should not be assumed to apply to an address outside its boundary.

05 / In practice

Evaluate the useful outcome

A diagnostic visit should leave you understanding what was assessed, what was established and what remains open. Ask how an intermittent issue that did not occur during attendance will be recorded, and what follow-up would be appropriate. For a repair proposal, compare the locations, materials, restoration, applicable authority records and provider support terms. Keep immediate repairs distinct from improvements such as additional circuits or a broader renovation. HAUSE helps prepare and route a request for a qualified assessment; the actual provider sets its fees and confirms whether it can take on the work.

Common questions

Why does this guide not give a typical dollar figure?

The same symptom can involve very different access and work. Ask for a written diagnostic scope and current provider pricing for your actual property.

Is a free quotation the same as diagnosis?

Not necessarily. Ask what assessment, if any, is included. A quotation based on a described scope may assume someone else has already identified the cause.

What if I cannot approve changes during the visit?

Name an authorized contact and an agreed limit before attendance. Ask the provider how unresolved work and further approvals will be handled.
